Stoney

Sheffield’s own Stoney returns!

For those with knowledge of the UK underground music scene, The name of Mark Stoney may already be a familiar one, for the distinctive songwriting talent of the critically acclaimed and somewhat enigmatic multi-instrumentalist has been held in high regard among many in the know on both sides of the Atlantic for some time now…
Initially rising to prominence as a luminary outlier in the “New Yorkshire” scene of the late noughties with his much-celebrated underground indie debut “The Scene & the Unseen” (“A hidden gem of a debut, packed with invention” – NME), the multi-instrumentalist toured alongside the likes of the Arctic Monkeys, Jamie T and Laura Marling, before relocating to the US where his Shape-shifting eclecticism, poetic lyrics & classic melodies won the support of Uber-producer Rick Rubin and LA tastemaker DJ Nic Harcourt, among others.

Setting up camp for the next few years in Austin, Tx, Stoney spent a couple of “hazy years” touring both US coasts as co-founder and guitarist of lauded Austin-based dirt-pop trio, Bobby Jealousy, alongside Merge records’ Sabrina Ellis (A Giant Dog/Sweet Spirit) and Seth Gibbs before resuming his solo career with the critically praised album “More Than Animals” (- “Stoneyhas created the most grand and courtly record in years” – The Big Takeover Magazine.) Returning to his musical homeland of Sheffield shortly after the release, Stoney began working transatlantically as a producer and co-writer with both emerging talent and established acts including Jade Castrinos (Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros) and The Big Pink, and contributed to several film and television soundtracks, whilst contemporaneously developing his own work.

Now re-emerging from the shadows with a fresh sound and his strongest material to date , Stoney’s long- awaited return to the fray in 2025 demonstrate Stoney’s natural British pop sensibilities refined with profoundly intimate lyrics and soaring melodic arrangements that burst with passion, personality, and depth

“…And I thought baroque pop was dead. Sheffield-via-Austin musician Stoney has created the most grand and courtly record in years, completely unlike anything else being made today…”— The Big Takeover Magazine

“..One moment the gifted lone operator affects the kind of trenchant rock-riff panache associated with the younger Bowie, the next he’s rattling off urban nightlife images with the droll elegance of The Kinks…— The Independent
“… A Gem of a record, packed with invention..” NME

“..More Than Animals is poetic, diverse, the mellow up against the eerie. Songs like “We Belonged” and “Albatross” are compassionately heartfelt while “Devil On My Back” and “The Score” are devilishly menacing…“- Huffington Post
