John Law’s Congregation

Jazz at the Lescar Presents: John Law’s Congregation / Thursday 24th February / Yellow Arch Studios / £15 (£8 students)

A brilliant line-up led by John Law, one of Europe’s leading jazz pianist/composers, with 40+ recordings, and appearances at venues and festivals worldwide, including London Jazz Festival, Ronnie Scotts, the Bimhuis in Amsterdam, and the North Sea Jazz Festival.

Congregation’s album CONFIGURATION (Ubuntu Music) was voted by critics including BBC Music Magazine amongst the top 20 CDs of 2020; a cinematic mix of anthemic melodies and subtle electronic ambient textures combined with complex harmonies and rhythms.

Mixing contemporary jazz with rock and electronic music, this line-up also features three outstanding talents from the UK contemporary jazz scene.

James Mainwaring on tenor sax is a member of Mercury Prize finalists, Roller Trio, an expressive and dynamic musician who also features on guitar and electronics in this band.

Bass player Ashley John Long (Keith Tippett, Charlotte Keeffe) is a classical virtuoso, as well a vastly experienced jazz and improvised music player, a riveting performer with a beautiful sound.

They’re joined by one of the most in-demand drummers in the UK, powerful yet nuanced, Dave Hamblett (Magic Lantern).

Lyrical, evocative and engaging music from a wonderful band, one of the very best on the UK jazz scene.
